Step into a pharmacy and you will notice that facial cleansers now occupy an entire section on their own. with the multitude of types available, how do you pick one that suits you?

Before you lay hands on the cheapest, newest or most attractively packaged one, there's one thing you should keep uppermost in mind - your skin type. Most people assume their skin type is normal. however, normal skin is relatively rare and the majority of us fall under one of the other three categories: dry, oily or combination skin.

So, which skin type do you have?

Skin Types
Dry skin is especially common among women above age 30, although it can manifest at any age. Dry skin has a tendency to flake, and if your T-zone and cheeks are dry, chances are you fall under this category.

Oily skin is especially prone to acne and has a constant shiny appearance with enlarged pores, whereas combination skin, as the name suggests, is a mixture of different skin types. Many skin cleansers act too harshly and end up aggravating the problem. For instance, some cleansers that are designed for oily skin have chemicals that strip the skin of its natural emollient layer, causing the oil glands to produce more oil to balance the condition. The result? An even oily skin!

Dry Skin
If you have dry skin, steer clear of any cleansers or toners which have alcohol or witch hazel, both of which aggravate flaky skin. A mild soap is normally sufficient for this skin type.

Oily Skin
For oily skin, water-based products are more suitable than oil-based ones. Alcohol containing products are also a no-no. as their excessive drying properties will increase the skin's oil production.

Sensitive Skin
Those with sensitive skin will benefit from a visit to a dermatologist, who can clear up any concerns and identify the root of the sensitivity. This is particularly important if it is related to an allergic reaction to a facial product. Once the cause has been recognized, you can then pick the most suitable cleanser for your skin.

Acne Skin
Acne-prone skin is best treated with cleansers that contain chemicals like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid - common ingredients in acne- combating products. If you are susceptile to acne, avoid using cleansers that are abrasive.
